We can't be sure, but it's possible a resourceful young man from California held a footboard from a Standard waterbed and thought "what if ...", and attached it to the head of the bed as a headboard, then found another footboard. In any case the first hardside model with a headboard is a popular selection to this day among the "hardsiders".
